Representing perhaps the most important supporting feature of Shimano’s 12 speed mountain drivetrains are the completely redesigned freehubs. The all new Micro Spline freehub interface has been widened to accept 12 speed cassettes as well as cogs smaller than 12t. The biggest visual differentiation in the Micro Spline design are its 23 deep, rectangular splines which are not backwards compatible with the familiar 9/10/11 speed freehub interface. Moving inside the hub, a clutch system has been introduced for silent coasting. The Scylence freehub system applies pedaling torque to engage the driver and when the pedaling stops, a spring disengages the drive system for a low friction and silent action while coasting. The system was designed to be as simple as possible while minimizing radial loads so that the hubs can be as light as possible. An excellent weapon when flow matters.
